Gameday Preview: Soccer Visits Land of Enchantment for UNM Nike Classic

The Kent State women's soccer team (2-2-0) ventures to New Mexico this weekend to take part in the four-team UNM Nike Classic. First up for the Golden Flashes is a first-ever contest with Tulsa Friday, Sept. 11 at 4 p.m. MT. KSU will then take on Cal State Northridge Sunday, Sept. 13 at 10:30 a.m. MT in the first meeting between the two teams.
Host New Mexico will have both live video and game statistics for all four games this weekend available through the Nike Invitational home page.
In A Flash: Friday's game marks the first neutral site game for Kent State since the 2006 season.
Flash Forward: Following this weekend, KSU returns home for a three-game home stand, starting Sept. 18 with Michigan State. Kent State will also begin Mid-American Conference play during the home series when the Flashes entertain Ball State Sept. 25.
Scouting the Flashes: Kent State is coming off a 1-0 double-overtime win against in-state foe Youngstown State Sept. 6. In the contest, senior Catharine Marosszeky (Aurora, Ontario) scored the game-winning strike with just 31 seconds left in overtime to seal the win. The goal was Marosszeky's first of the season, 14th of her career and seventh game-winning goal as a Golden Flash.
Goalkeeper Kelly Sherwood (Strongsville, Ohio) registered her third career shutout Sunday at Youngstown State, making one save in the contest. On the year, Sherwood boasts a 0.92 goals-against average.
Through four games, Kelly Heaton (Mississauga, Ontario) is the team leader with three points on a goal and an assist. Kellyn Flanagan (Medina, Ohio) and Beth Diederich (Pittsburgh, Pa.) also have found the scoring column for the Golden Flashes this season.
Kent State has brought plenty of offensive pressure this season. Through four games, the Flashes have a 24-6 corner kick advantage on their foes and are averaging 15.0 shots per game.
Scouting the Opponents: Tulsa (2-1-1) is coming off a convincing 7-0 win over Louisiana-Monroe Sept. 6. In that game, the Golden Hurricane was effective offensively, scoring seven times on just 10 shots on goal.
Leading Tulsa offensively is Kayla Chambers, who has six points on three goals. Jennifer Kacergis is close behind with five points thanks to two goals and an assist. In goal for the Golden Hurricane is Katie Bykowski. The redshirt freshman boasts a 0.95 goals-against average with two shutouts.
Cal State Northridge (3-3-0) snapped a two-game slide with a 1-0 win over Vermont Sept. 6. Farryn Townley scored the game-winner in the 29th minute for the game's only goal.
Townley leads the Matadors with six points on three goals this year, while Sonia Espitia and Niki Connolly each have two goals. Kelley Ross has a team-high two assists through six games. In goal, Leah Elliott played every minute of the first five games of the season for the Matadors, posting a 1.80 GAA before Kellie Drenner and Haley Hawes split the shutout against Vermont.
