KENT, Ohio - To say it was the tale of two meets may be an understatement. Kent State (3-1, 1-0) went from season highs on vault (48.975) and bars (49.100) to a season low on beam (47.075) but defeated George Washington (3-6) 193.950-188.600 Friday night (Jan. 29) at the M.A.C. Center.
The Flashes overcame three falls on beam to win every event on the night, including a difference with the Colonials of more than two points (49.100-46.725) on bars.
Beginning the night on vault, the Golden Flashes took home the top six spots for a vault score of 48.975. Junior Christi Lenny won on vault for the third consecutive meet to begin the season with a 9.85. Senior Lydia Barrett and freshman Lauren Wozniak tied for second with a pair of 9.800s.
On bars, the Flashes turned in one of the best scores in recent memory (49.100). Sophomore Erin Rothrock turned in the fourth-best bars routine in school history with a 9.925. Junior Christine Abou-Mitri placed second with a bar routine of 9.825 while freshmen Rachel Guida and Lindsay Runyan turned in scores of 9.800.
With three falls on beam, Kent State may have opened the door for George Washington, but the Colonials had problems of its own as KSU won the event 47.075-45.425. Abou-Mitri took home her second title of the night with a 9.725 while senior Carly Conroy finished third with a routine of 9.650.
Kent State finished with a solid floor rotation (48.800) to close the meet. Abou-Mitri claimed the event win with a 9.850 while Lenny closed the night with a score of 9.825. Barrett finished a solid night with a 9.800.
If two titles were not enough, Abou-Mitri blew away the competition in the all-around with a season-high total of 39.175, her second-consecutive week eclipsing a 39 combined total for all events.
Kent State returns to action next Saturday night when it travels to Cedar City, Utah to take on Southern Utah. Meet time is scheduled for 9 p.m. EST (7 P.M. MST).
