First MAC Title for Baseball Team
The Kent State baseball team won its first MAC Championship in 1964 after defeating Western Michigan and Ohio, the only two teams to have won the title in MAC history at that time. The team set numerous records in the process, including the most wins in a season (18), the most consecutive wins (9) and the best winning percentage (.900). The Flashes were known for stealing bases in 1964 and accounted for the most stolen bases in a season (70), in one game (8) and by one player (21 by Joe Santora).
Fan support for the team was so strong that seating at the Kent State baseball field was increased from 700 to 2,500 for the NCAA District 4 Playoffs against the Minnesota Gophers. The first game set an attendance record with 3,000 fans present.
Head coach Dick “Moose” Paskert was in his third season at Kent State and helped the team bounce back from a 7-17 record the year before. Team co-captains were Dan Norris and Gerry Hudec.
