Men's Basketball Reaches the NCAA Tournament's
Elite Eight in 2002
The Kent State men's basketball team had the best season in program history in 2002.
Seniors Trevor Huffman, Andrew Mitchell, Demetric Shaw and Eric Thomas and junior Antonio Gates helped the Flashes compile a 30-6 record and advance to the NCAA Tournament's Elite 8 for the first time in school history. Under first-year head coach Stan Heath, KSU set Mid-American Conference record for wins (30), conference wins (17) and longest winning streak (21).
In the NCAA Tournament, the 10th seeded Flashes knocked off Oklahoma State, 69-61, Alabama, 71-58, and Pittsburgh, 78-73, before falling to national runner-up Indiana, 81-69 in the South Region Final.
