KENT, Ohio — The Kent State field hockey team held a 25-9 advantage in shots taken, but it did not materialize on the scoreboard as the Golden Flashes fell to visiting Ohio 3-1 in a Mid-American Conference match-up earlier today at Murphy-Mellis Field.
"We had the stats but did not finish as a team," said Kent State Head Coach Kathleen (Schanne) Wiler.
Ohio (6-7; 3-1 MAC) grabbed a 2-0 lead at the half after taking advantage of both its penalty corner opportunities in the first period. The Bobcats jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the opening minutes when Cathryn Altdoerffer scored out of a penalty corner situation at the 3:30 mark. The Kent State (7-6; 2-2 MAC) deficit then grew to 2-0 just before half time when Andrea Biegalski scored for the Bobcats in the 32nd minute.
The Golden Flashes came alive in the second half earning 15 of their season high 18 corners and attempting 18 of their 25 shots. Junior Debbie Bell (Hamilton, New Zealand / Waikato) finally put Kent State on the board in the 58th minute to cut the margin in half with 13 minutes still remaining. The goal, which was out of a penalty corner, came off a pass from Rachel Miller (Bathurst, Australia/MacKillop College) and marked Bell's ninth of the season.
The Kent State momentum would be short lived for however as the Bobcat's Talyor Brown lofted a shot from the center of the circle into the back of the net less than two minutes later. The Golden Flashes continued to fight earning eight corners in the final 10 minutes, but were unable to add on to the scoreboard.
