Women's Basketball Tops Northeastern, 71-53

BOSTON, Mass. – The Kent State women's basketball team improved to 2-0 on the year Tuesday evening with a 71-53 victory over Northeastern.
Four players scored in double figures for Kent State, paced by senior Taisja Jones (Dallas, Texas). Jones had a team-best 16 points, while classmate Jamilah Humes (Saginaw, Mich.) added 14 points. Senior Chenel Harris (Mississauga, Ontario) registered 13 points, while freshman Tayler Stanton (Cincinnati, Ohio) came off the bench for 11 points.
Jones also snapped up a career-best six steals in leading Kent State's defensive effort, as the Golden Flashes forced 22 turnovers on 12 steals.
"Any time you can win your first two games, and with them being on the road, it's encouraging," said head coach Bob Lindsay. "Our team worked hard enough and made the plays to get the win, and that's an encouraging sign."
After spotting the host Huskies a 5-0 lead, Kent State went to work on both ends of the court and had a 14-10 lead with 11:31 to go in the first half. Kent State held Northeastern without a field goal for almost an eight-minute span in the first half, helping build a 21-10 lead.
Although the Golden Flashes didn't convert a three-point field goal in the first half, Kent State owned a 28-18 lead at the halftime break thanks to 47.8 percent field goal shooting and eight steals.
The Golden Flashes continued to build on its lead in the second half, aided by 21 trips to the free throw line. For the game, Kent State went 21-33 from the charity stripe.
Kent State out-rebounded Northeastern 40-38, and held the Huskies to just 25.9 percent shooting from three-point range.
Northeastern (0-2) was led by Rachael Pecota's 19 points, while Afreyea Tolbert and Kashaia Cannon chipped in 10 point apiece.
The Golden Flashes are next in action Tuesday, Nov. 23 when they face Washington in the first round of the Great Alaska Shootout.
