Pair of Hurlers Selected on Final Day of MLB Draft

NEW YORK - It was a pitcher's draft for a trio of Kent State Golden Flashes baseball players as junior Kyle Hallock and redshirt junior Robert Sabo was drafted on the final day of the 2010 MLB draft. Junior Brett Weibley was drafted in the 19th round yesterday.
Hallock was selected in the 49th round with the 27th pick (1491 overall) by the Philadelphia Phillies. The southpaw finished 2010 with an 8-5 record and a save with a 5.64 ERA in 83 innings pitched. The highlight of the season for Hallock came on May 29 when he received the win in both games of a double header on championship Saturday of the Mid-American Conference tournament. In Kent State's 9-8, 10-inning win over Eastern Michigan, Hallock threw a scoreless top of the 10th before KSU prevailed in the bottom of the inning. Just 45 minutes later, he started the championship game against Central Michigan, allowing only two earned runs and on five hits in seven innings pitched.
For his Kent State career, Hallock has a 12-9 mark with four saves in 190.2 innings of work.
Sabo was taken in the 44th round with the ninth pick (1324 overall) by the San Diego Padres. Coming out of the bullpen in 2007 and '09, Sabo started 16 games for Kent State in '10 and finished with a 6-5 record and a 4.65 ERA in 93 innings pitched. Sabo threw two complete games on the season when Kent State needed them most, throwing only 97 pitches in a complete game, five hit 9-1 win over Bowling Green on May 15 that moved KSU in the lead for good in the MAC East race. On May 27 against Miami, with the Flashes facing elimination, Sabo threw another complete game gem, allowing only three hits in Kent State's 9-2 win over the RedHawks.
For his career, Sabo finished with a 12-6 record with a 4.96 ERA in 147 innings pitched.
With Hallock and Weibley being taken this season (Sabo was drafted last season in the 38th round by the Cleveland Indians), Kent State has a total of 72 baseball players drafted. Sabo was the sixth Flash to be selected by the Padres, while Hallock is only the second taken by the Phillies.
