Trio of Flashes Earn Academic All-District IV Honors

KENT, Ohio - Junior women's golfer Martina Gavier (Cordoba, Argentina), senior gymnast Lydia Barrett (Rochester, N.Y./Penfield) and senior field hockey player Allison Kittelberger (Webster, N.Y./Schroeder) were named to the District IV Women's Academic At-Large team, released Thursday (May 19) by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Gavier earned first team honors while Barrett and Kittelberger were named to the second team all-district.
Gavier, who has a 3.86 GPA in international relations, was the medalist at the NCAA Central Regional at three-over par, leading the Flashes to an eighth-place finish and their fourth NCAA Championship berth. She won her first collegiate tournament at the conference championships and was named 2010 MAC Golfer of the Year, earning first-team all-conference honors for the third straight season. So far this season, Gavier has three top five and six top 20 finishes, including back-to-back victories.
Gavier is also a two-time National Golf Coaches Association All-Scholar Team selection and was named to the 2009 Academic All-MAC team. Internationally, she has twice represented Argentina in the World Amateur Team Championship.
Barrett, who has a 3.86 GPA in integrated health studies, has been named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District IV team for the first time after being named to the Academic All-MAC gymnastics team the past three seasons. She finished third in the MAC on bars with a regional qualifying score of 9.805, fifth on floor (9.835 RQS) and 11th on vault (9.770 RQS).
For her career, Barrett has captured individual conference championships on bars and floor. During her four years, KSU has won two MAC Gymnastics Championships and currently has an 18-meet win streak over conference opponents.
Kittelberger is a business management major with a 3.93 GPA. She started all 20 games for KSU, recording two goals and nine assists. Kittelberger was a key member of both the offensive and defensive corner units. In 2009, she was named first team All-MAC while also garnering second team All-MAC selections from 2006-08 and academic all-conference honors each of the last three seasons.
During her Kent State career, she was named to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFCHA) Division I Academic Squad four times and also played in the 2009 NFHCA Division I Senior All-Star Game.
With Gavier's first team selection, she is eligible for CoSIDA Academic All-American honors, to be announced Thursday, June 8.
