Judy Devine Speaks to KSU Summer Grads

KENT, Ohio – Judy Devine, a long-time member of Kent State Athletics who served the university for over 30 years as a coach and administrator, served as the keynote commencement speaker for KSU's summer 2010 graduation ceremonies.
The Senior Associate Athletics Director Emerita related to the graduating class of 1,400 students not only with her stories of inspiration and eagerness as the group leaves academia for the "real world," but because she owns a masters degree in Health and Physical Education from Kent State University.
"I have been a KSU student," said Devine. "For 40 years I have devoted my time and effort to this institution: So if you poke me, I will bleed blue and gold. We are part of the same family.
"The diploma you received today is not a guarantee," Devine continued. "But it does represent that you have been given the tools to carve your unique niche in society. You graduates have had the privilege of attending one of the premier institutions of higher education."
Following her address, Kent State President Lester A. Lefton presented Devine with a special alumni award for her "outstanding professional achievements and dedication to your alma mater."
"Judy, you've been a great member of this family; you continue to be a great member of this family. You bring to Kent State an enthusiasm that really does suggest that you'd shoot for the moon and land on the stars," said Lefton as he presented Devine with the award on behalf of the Kent State Alumni Association.
 Devine, who started her Kent State career in 1969 as a graduate assistant, was a 2003 inductee into the Varsity "K" Athletic Hall of Fame. Among her roles while at Kent State were women's basketball head coach, field hockey head coach, Senior Woman Administrator and associate athletic director.
