Game Day Preview: Soccer Hits the Highway for Indiana, IUPUI This Weekend

The Kent State women's soccer team (1-2-2) continues its road swing this weekend as the Golden Flashes will travel to Indiana Friday, Sept 17 for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff. KSU will then challenge IUPUI Sunday, Sept. 19 at 1 p.m.
Friday's game at Indiana will feature live stats as well as live video (subscription required). Sunday's game versus IUPUI will have live stats available.
In A Flash: Freshman Jessacca Gironda (Akron, Ohio) currently ranks 46th in the
nation offensively, as her nine points in five games (1.80 ppg) is
among the national leaders. She ranks sixth in the country among
freshmen.
Scouting the Flashes: Kent State used late-minute
heroics Sept. 12, as the Golden Flashes scored in the
89th minute to force a 1-1 draw with Pittsburgh at Carl
A. Newman Stadium at North Allegheny High School. After trailing
when Pitt scored in the 36th minute, Kent State pressed
forward in the final 15 minutes of regulation. The increased effort
came to fruition, when freshman Jessacca Gironda (Akron, Ohio) scored her fourth goal of the season off
an assist from senior Kelly Heaton
(Mississauga, Ontario).
Neither team could tally a score in the 20 minutes of overtime, giving the Golden Flashes not only their second tie of the season, but their first draw against Pittsburgh in five meetings. Kent State entered the game 0-4-0 all-time against th e Panthers.
Scouting the Opponents: Indiana (3-4-0) is in the midst of a
three-game losing streak heading into Friday's contest with Kent
State. Most recently, the Hoosiers suffered a 5-2 loss to #7 Texas
A&M Sept. 10 before a 3-1 loss to Hofstra Sept. 12. Carly Samp,
who has four goals and two assists for 10 points, leads Indiana
offensively. The Series: Friday will be the
first-ever meeting between Kent State and Indiana.
IUPUI (2-5-0) split last week's action in a pair of
contests; after beating Western Michigan 1-0 Sept. 10 in double
overtime at home, the Jaguars lost 1-0 to Valparaiso on the road
Sept. 12. In all five of their losses this season, the Jaguars have
been shut out. Megan Hock has three of IUPUI's four goals this
season, while Alicia Brock leads the team with two assists.
The Series: Kent State is 1-0-0 all-time against
IUPUI after a 6-1 win during the 2002 season.
Next Up: The Golden Flashes will begin Mid-American Conference play Friday, Sept. 24 when Kent State travels to Miami (Ohio) for a 4 p.m. contest. Kent State's first four MAC games are all on the road.
