Kent State Changes Its Nickname From Silver Foxes to Golden Flashes
After adopting the nickname Silver Foxes in 1923, Kent State held a contest to select a new mascot in 1926.
The contest, which offered a $25 prize, resulted in the new nickname of Golden Flashes. Sports editor and former KSU football star Oliver Wolcott helped the name gain widespread recognition.
Over the years, the Golden Flash has been a variety of different mascots ranging from a golden retriever in the 50s, Grog in the 60s, Freddie Flash in the 70s to the current live eagle.
