Flashes travel to Oxford, Ohio, to face Miami Saturday in the fourth match of a five-match road trip.
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- The Kent State lost to Bowling Green, 3-0 (25-22, 25-15, 25-21), in a Mid-American Conference interdivision match Friday (Oct. 28) at the Stroh Center.
The Golden Flashes (8-18, 1-10 MAC) lost their sixth straight match.
Senior Maigan Larsen (Lancaster, Wis.) and junior Kathy Krupa (Burbank, Ill.) led Kent State with seven kills apiece. Freshman Lauren Engleman (Cincinnati, Ohio) totaled a match-high four blocks (four assisted). Sophomore Aleksandra Nowak (Damnica, Poland) led the match with 21 set assists. Freshman Bridget Grdina (Mentor, Ohio) and sophomore Hannah Herc (Eden, N.Y.) each finished in double digits in digs, tallying 12 and 11, respectively.
The Flashes kept pace with the Falcons (18-7, 5-6 MAC) in the first set, using two kills apiece by Larsen and Krupa and service aces by Engleman and freshman Jenny Buczek (Orland Park, Ill.) and a double block by Engleman and freshman Maddie Davis (Chillicothe, Ohio) to keep the score even at 13-all. Kent State did not trail by more than three until Bowling Green turned a one-point lead at 17-16 into a 24-20 advantage courtesy of three straight Kent State errors. The Flashes pulled to within two points three more times but could not get any closer as Bowling Green won the opening set by three.
The Falcons won the second set by 10 and appeared to be cruising to a sweep after jumping out to a 19-9 lead in the third. Kent State did not quit, though, going on a 6-1 run thanks to two kills by Larsen, one apiece by Buczek, Krupa and freshman Tinuke Aderemi-Ibitola (Ellicott City, Md.) and a double block by Nowak and Krupa to force Bowling Green to call timeout with the score at 20-16. The Falcons pushed their lead back to seven with three straight points, but a 5-1 Kent State run featuring two kills by Buczek and two double blocks by Engleman and Aderemi-Ibitola closed the gap back to three. Unfortunately for the Flashes, the Falcons were able to stop Kent State's comeback bid with a kill to close out the sweep.
Bowling Green sophomore Danielle Tonyan recorded a match-high 11 kills. Sophomore Ashley Dunn led the way on the defensive end with a match-high 18 digs. She was joined in double digits by redshirt freshman Eric Fullencamp, who totaled 10 and achieved a double-double with 13 set assists. Sophomore Laura Avila matched Nowak's match high of 21 set assists.
Kent State's fourth match of a five-match road trip features a trip to Oxford, Ohio, Saturday (Oct. 29) to square off MAC East Divison rival Miami.
