KENT, Ohio – When Kent State University President Lester A. Lefton visited Brice Biggin last week prior to a gymnastics team practice, the 21-year head coach was more than caught off guard.
Surrounded by family, friends, student-athletes and Kent State staff members, Biggin was honored by Lefton as one of 10 Kent State University employees as a recipient of a President's Excellence Award. The 2011-12 academic year marks the third year for the awards.
A longtime fixture in Kent State athletics as both a coach and student-athlete, Biggin was honored by Lefton for aiding in the success of Kent State student-athletes this year. Last season, Kent State advanced to the 2011 NCAA Gymnastics Championship, marking the first time the Golden Flashes appeared in the national championship. Biggin was also honored as the 2011 National Association of College Gymnastics Coaches/Women (NACGC/W) Head Coach of the Year.
Along with a letter of commendation, Biggin also received a check for $1,000.
The President's Excellence Award was implemented in 2009 to recognize full-time classified and unclassified employees who demonstrated exceptional performance in advancing one of the goals of the university's excellence agenda during the previous fiscal year. Nearly 250 nominations were received this year.
Of note, Biggin is the second Kent State athletics staff member to be honored with a President's Excellence Award. Women's basketball assistant coach Lori Bodnar was one of the inaugural award winners in 2009.
