Four-time Recipient George Highlights 10 For Kent State Named To National Academic Team

KENT, Ohio — Winners of three straight Mid-American Conference regular season titles on the field, the Kent State field hockey team is also taking care of business in the classroom. The Golden Flashes had 10 student-athletes named to the 2010 Gladiator by SGI / National Field Hockey Coach Association Division I National Academic Squad, including midfielder Katie George (Springfield, Pa. / Cardinal O'Hara) who was honored for a fourth consecutive season.
The National Academic Squad recognizes those student-athletes who have achieved a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 or higher through the first semester of the 2010-11 academic year. Its the third straight year that the Golden Flashes have had 10 student-athletes honored. In addition Kent State was also recognized by the NFHCA for having a team GPA above a 3.0.
A second team All-MAC performer in 2010, George is the eighth player in school history to be named to the national academic squad four times.
Joining her from Kent State this season are three-time honorees junior Carla Johl (Hamilton, New Zealand / Waikato), senior Nicole Leach (San Diego,Calif. / Mira Mesa), junior Chelsea Sickel (Plaistow, N.H. / Timberlane Regional) and junior Julie Sickel (Plaistow, N.H. / Timberlane Regional). Earning recognition for a second consecutive year were junior Amy Wimsatt (Louisville, Ky. / Mercy Academy) and sophomore Kirstin Willders (Lititz, Pa. / Kempsville Warwick) and
First time award winners for the Golden Flashes included freshmen Sabrina Binder (Krefeld, Germany/Arndt-Gymnasium), Rebecca Lee (Bathurst, Australia/The Scots School) and Melanie Kahn (San Diego, Calif./Serra).
