Holt Named East Player of the Week; Flashes Visit Robert Morris Wednesday

As Kent State prepares for a doubleheader at Robert Morris Wednesday, junior shortstop Mary Holt was named MAC East Player of the Week Tuesday. The Golden Flashes are riding a six-game winning streak, due largely in part to offensive production from players like Holt. Over its last six games, KSU has scored 70 runs, while carrying a .566 slugging percentage.
In four games year over the weekend, Holt ripped three doubles and her fifth home run of the helping Kent State to a 4-0 start in conference play. She carried a 1.000 slugging percentage and a .500 on-base percentage in 12 plate appearances on the week. Holt led the team with six runs batted in four games, and drove in the go-ahead run in a 3-2 win at Bowling Green with a double in the bottom of the fifth.
Holt is one of four players in the KSU lineup with nine or more extra base hits. Offensively, the Golden Flashes are off to their best start in over 30 years, hitting .303 as a team with 73 extra base hits in 29 games.  Despite a 13-16 record, KSU has scored 31 more runs than their opponents this season (182-151).
Joining Holt with a breakthrough week was sophomore pitcher Danielle Abernathy. In four appearances on the weekend, Abernathy went 3-0 with a save, allowing just one earned run. She did not allow an earned run in a complete game win over Bowling Green and had scoreless relief appearances against Toledo and Bowling Green. Abernathy was also in line for another win earlier in the week with her team up 5-2 against Pittsburgh, before snow forced a cancellation. Abernathy is 7-3 on the season with six complete games.
