The Kent State wrestling team announced the recent addition of Sam Wheeler (Copley, Ohio), who transferred from Oklahoma. A true freshman, Wheeler will compete unattached in open tournaments this season and will have four years of eligibility remaining.
“Sam is a very good athlete with a great wrestling sense,” Head Coach Jim Andrassy said. “Right now, he's a 174-pounder, but he could go up a weight class or two in the future.”
While competing at Copley High School, Wheeler was a 2011 state champion and the 2010 state runner-up. He finished third at the 2010 FloNationals. Prior to the season, InterMat ranked Wheeler as the No. 12 recruit in the nation at 184.
“Sam left Oklahoma in good standing,” Andrassy said. “He was one of the best recruits in the country and we tried to get him earlier. He wants to be closer to home now. He'll have the rest of the year to work out with our upper weights and can spend some time with Dustin Kilgore.”
Other notable performances by Wheeler included a fourth place at the 2010 Cadet Nationals and being named MVP of the Hephner Memorial Tournament. As a junior, he went 53-1 with his only loss coming in the state finals.
