Kent State concludes season with 13-5-2 record
OXFORD, Ohio – The Kent State women's soccer team saw its historic 2012 season come to an end Friday afternoon, as the Golden Flashes lost to top-seeded Miami 3-1 in the semifinals of the 2012 Mid-American Conference Women's Soccer Championship.
Miami (18-2-1) scored goals in the run of play in the game's eighth and 80th minutes to take a 2-0 lead late in the contest.
Kent State cut the deficit in the 88th minute when freshman defender Briana Bartolone (Auburn, Ohio) scored her third goal of the season off a corner kick by junior forward Jaclyn Dutton (Bridgeport, Ohio). The corner kick gave Dutton her seventh assist of the season.
But before the Golden Flashes could get another attempt to tie the game, Kent State was whistled for a foul inside the penalty box just over 30 seconds later. Miami converted on the ensuing penalty kick to boost their lead up to 3-1 for the game's final two minutes.
Miami out-shot Kent State 14-7, but both teams mustered five shots on goal. Kent State goalkeeper Stephanie Senn (Grand Island, N.Y.) made two saves in the setback.
Friday's setback ends the careers of Kent State's four-player senior class: Sara Henderson, Hannah Newhouse, Christine Pellegrino and Megan Repas. The four players helped Kent State amass 25 wins over the last two seasons, the most victories in a two-year span in program history.
The season's conclusion also brought the re-writing of multiple team and individual records. Kent State tied or set seven team season records, including wins (13), winning percentage (.700), goals (40) and assists (44). Individually, Dutton set the single-season points record with 37 points (15g/7a) and penalty kicks made in a season (4). Senn's eight shutouts and 13 victories are new team individual standards, while her goals-against average of 0.84 for the year is third-best in team records.
The RedHawks advance to the title game, where they will face the winner of #2 Central Michigan and #6 Toledo on Sunday, Nov. 4.
