Kent State junior Tyler Skulina (Strongsville, Ohio) has been named a Pre-Season Second-Team All-American by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association after an impressive 2012 season as part of Kent State Baseball's most successful year.
Skulina went 11-3 in 18 starts for the Flashes. The righty struck out 106 batters through 107.1 innings while only issuing 45 walks.
The Walsh Jesuit product was a big part of Kent State's historical post-season run. He went six innings allowing just four base-runners and two hits in the Flashes' Mid-American Tournament win versus Buffalo to get to the championship game. Skulina also threw a two-hitter in 5.2 scoreless innings against Oregon in NCAA Super Regionals.
Skulina is no stranger to success. After sitting out the 2011 season following a transfer from Virginia, he was named MAC East Pitcher of the Week on three occasions. Prior to that, Skulina went 26-0 at Walsh Jesuit High School where he racked up numerous awards. He was drafted by the Oakland Athletics in the 46th round of the 2010 Major League Baseball Draft.
