Kent, Ohio – Despite staging a huge 16 point comeback to end the first half, Kent State (1-8) couldn't hold off Western Kentucky (7-2) at the M.A.C. Center Sunday afternoon.
With four minutes to go in the first half, Kent State found themselves down 32-15. They then went on a 16-0 run to be within one point of the lead at halftime.
The lead went back-and-forth to start the second portion of the game, until Western Kentucky grabbed the lead for good with 11 minutes to go. The Flashes had the lead within three points after a jump shot by Ashley Evans with 29 seconds to play and again with 18 seconds left after a Rachel Mendelsohn foul shot. However, the Lady Toppers made free throws of their own down the stretch to keep the game out of reach.
Diamon Beckford had her first double-double of the season, scoring 17 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. She was perfect from the charity stripe, making all five of her attempts. Tamzin Barroilhet also finished in double-digits with 15 points.
Two Flashes reached personal season-highs in the game. Mendelsohn had a season-high seven points. Melanee Stubbs had a season-high seven rebounds.
Kent State shot 70.8% from the free throw line, including making nine out of ten in the first half. They also saw improvement in turnovers for the second game in a row. They turned the ball over 17 times, six below their average. However, the Flashes shot just 32.1% from the field and went 0-for-11 from three-point range.
Alexis Govan led the Lady Toppers in scoring with 17 points. Chastity Gooch contributed to the WKU victory with 15 points and 11 rebounds.
