In addition to the regular season finale against the Zips, the Golden Flashes' Feb. 29 contest against Ohio has been selected for a 7:00 pm SportsTime Ohio broadcast.
Separated by a mere 14 miles, Kent State and Akron have met in the final game of the regular season each of the past six seasons. The past four years the outcome of the game has decided the MAC regular season champion with the Golden Flashes winning titles in 2008, 2010 and 2011 while spoiling the Zips bid for their first league crown in 2009. The 2007 winner determined the MAC East Division Champion, and in 2006 Kent State won the MAC title despite losing the game to Akron.
Kent State leads the all-time series against Akron 69-64 and has won 30 of the last 33 meetings at home. Akron won the first encounter this season at home 84-75, but the Golden Flashes have since reeled off wins in seven straight games to climb into a tie for second in the MAC East Division and overall standings.
The game will be the third appearance by Kent State on the ESPN family of networks this season.
The Golden Flashes (19-6; 9-3) head into this weekend's Sears BracketBuster game against the College of Charleston on the verge of their 13th 20-win season in the last 14 years. Defending MAC Player of the Year, senior forward Justin Greene continues to carry the team averaging 16.3 points in MAC play. Behind Greene's production Kent State has been the highest scoring team during conference play as averaging a league best 74.5 points per game and shooting over 40 percent from three.
On Saturday, the Golden Flashes will be celebrating the 10th anniversary of the 2002 Elite Eight team, including All-American Antonio Gates during the game which can been seen live on SportsTime Ohio at 6:00 pm.
