The Golden Flashes got their first true taste of the College World Series experience on Thursday. The team was kept busy all afternoon with a day full of practice, fan gatherings and media obligations.
Due to rain and thunderstorms in the area the opening ceremonys were canceled at TD Ameritrade Park and had to be moved inside. Players and coaches for all teams were then treated to some signature Omaha BBQ and awaited the presentation of the NCAA College World Series academic awards.Â
With a 3.093 team GPA, the Golden Flashes were honored for having the highest team GPA among the eight teams in the College Worlds Series. Additionally junior Jason Bagoly, Finance was recognized for having the top GPA for Kent State.
The academic honors com on the heels of the NCAAs APR Public Recognition Award announcement on Thursday monring. Based on the most recent multi-year Academic Progress Rate, the award is given each year to teams with APRs in the top 10 percent in each sport.
With perfect 1000 multi-year APR, Kent State baseball was recognized for a third straight year, putting the team in elite company as one of only 16 schools in the country to reach the accomplishment. Of the 16 teams to earn the public recognition the past three years, the Golden Flashes program is the only public institution on the list that includes Brown, Bucknell, Holy Cross, Columbia, Dartmouth, Duke, Georgetown, Harvard, Lafayette, Mount St. Mary's, St. Joseph's, Stanford, Penn, Vanderbilt and YaleÂ
Friday the team is planning a trip by Rosenblatt Stadium before practice. The first games of the College World Series on then on tap for the evening as UCLA faces Stony Brook and Florida State takes on Arizona.
