Flashes Dismantle VMI Before Falling to Virginia Tech

HAMPTON, Va. – Kent State settled for an opening day split at the Virginia Duals Friday inside the Hampton Coliseum. The Golden Flashes took nine matches from VMI in a 44-3 victory, before falling to Virginia Tech 26-9 in the quarterfinals.
Fifth-year seniors Dustin Kilgore (Berea, Ohio) and Casey Newburg (Union, Ohio) led the way with 2-0 days. The duo had Kent State's only two victories against the Hokies.
Kilgore extended his NCAA winning streak to 43 matches with a first period pin of Virginia Tech's Bobby Lavelle. A minute into the match, Kilgore set up his cross-face cradle to record his eighth fall of the year.
Newburg was relentless in his opening match with a 16-0 tech fall in the opening period over VMI's Hardy Hendren. After an opening takedown, Newburg repeatedly tilted Hendren to his back. He then topped Virginia Tech's Nick Vetterlein 6-1.
Coming close to a 2-0 day was senior Stevie Mitcheff (Lorain, Ohio), who dropped an 8-7 overtime bout against No. 4 Jarrod Garnett. Mitcheff notched a third period pin in his first match after taking a 12-0 lead.
Redshirt freshman Nick Carr (South Fayette, Pa.) also faced a Top 5 opponent in Virginia Tech's Nick Brascewtta. Carr dropped a 6-3 decision after winning his opener 4-1 over Zeb Stewart.
Sophomore Caleb Marsh (Marysville, Ohio) and senior Keith Witt (Oak Harbor, Ohio) each tallied pins against VMI.
The Golden Flashes will take on Arizona State tomorrow at 10 a.m. The winner will compete again at 4 p.m., immediately followed by duals for fifth and seventh place finishes.
