Kent State vs Buffalo Game Notes (pdf)
THE GAME
Kent State (2-13, 0-2) hopes to pick up their first conference victory on Wednesday (Jan. 13) night as they host Buffalo in a 7:00 pm contest. The game is Kent State's first Mid-American Conference home game.
The Flashes' success seems to come when they are connecting shots from beyond the arc and at the free-throw line. In their first win against Temple, Kent State made a season-high seven three-pointers. Shooting 56% from three-point range in the win against Bethune-Cookman was also a season-high. Kent State had season-highs in free throws made in both their victories. They made 24 shots (83%) against Temple and 26 shots (77%) against Bethune-Cookman at the charity stripe.
Tamzin Barroilhet has been the most consistent Flash on the floor this season. She is averaging 10.3 points and 6.7 rebounds on the year, including 9.5 points and 6.5 rebounds in conference play alone. Fellow senior captain Trisha Krewson follows her with 9.1 points and 4.5 rebounds per game. She also averages 9.5 points and 6.5 rebounds against MAC opponents. Ashley Evans has stepped up her game in conference play, averaging 9.5 points a game while shooting 47% from the field, including 2-for-4 from three-point range. Evans also has a team-leading 44 assists in 15 games.
Coach Danielle O'Banion is sticking with her goal to lessen playing time for her players. Only one on the team is averaging more than 30 minutes of playing time a game. Only Barroilhet, Beckford and Krewson have averged more than 25 minutes a game.
Kent State has struggled with MAC opponents in the opening two games, losing to Bowling Green, 69-33, and Akron, 93-58. However, Kent State is continuing to do well in rebounding and free-throws moving into conference play. In two games, they have 73 rebounds compared to their opponents' 74. They also are matching their overall free throw percentage at 71%.
Despite entering MAC play with a 2-11 record like the Flashes, the Bulls are 2-0 in the conference, picking up a 60-53 victory against Northern Illinois and a 73-36 victory against Ohio, both at home. Cherridy Thorton leads Buffalo in scoring on the season, averaging 11.4 points and 5.4 rebounds a game. Christa Baccas leads the team in rebounds, averaging 7.9.
