Golden Flashes, Zips to battle as part of PNC Wagon Wheel Challenge
CLEVELAND, Ohio – For the fourth consecutive year, the biggest rivalry in the Mid-American Conference will be brought to the national spotlight as the Kent State-Akron contest at the M.A.C. Center on Saturday, January 19 at 3 p.m. will be broadcast on ESPNU, the league office announced on Thursday.
Separated by a mere 14 miles, Kent State and Akron have met 135 times on the hardwood with the Golden Flashes holding a 69-66 advantage in the all-time series. The Flashes have won 30 of the last 34 meetings at home while the Zips were able to come away victorious in all three meetings a season ago.
The Golden Flashes (9-5) will take a four-game winning streak into next Wednesday's MAC opener against Toledo. They will then go on the road for games at Ball State (Jan. 12) and Buffalo (Jan. 16) before returning to the M.A.C. Center to take on the Zips as part of the PNC Wagon Wheel Challenge.
This will be the second appearance on the ESPN family of networks for Kent State this season. The Flashes previously hosted Temple as part of ESPN's College Hoops Tip-Off Marathon on Nov. 13.
Kent State will have back-to-back games televised as the Flashes' Jan. 16 contest at Buffalo with be broadcast on SportsTime Ohio. Games against Eastern Michigan (Feb. 2) and Miami (Feb. 13) will also be carried by STO. The Flashes have played three televised games already and are scheduled to make at least four, and as many as 10, more television appearances this season.
