KENT, Ohio – Kent State (5-8) fought hard against No. 10 Northwestern (11-3) on Sunday (Oct. 6) afternoon, but couldn't pull the upset, losing 3-1.
"We put together two halves today," said Head Coach Kathleen Wiler, "which is something we've been striving to do. We just need to be able to put the chances in the back of the net."
Northwestern scored at the nine and 28 minute marks to take a 2-0 lead into halftime. They scored their third goal 43 minutes in.
Madison Thompson got the Golden Flashes on the board later in the second half, scoring on a ball that deflected off the post.
Kent State had a strong defensive effort for the second straight game. They held Northwestern to just one corner in the first half; they did not allow a corner in the opening 35 minutes against Missouri State the game before.
"Our defense is being anchored back there by Sabrina Binder," said Wiler. "We just asked her to be tough, stay tough, and I think she's doing a great job at that."
The Golden Flashes were out-shot 14-7 in the game. Julia Hofmann led with three shots for Kent State. Two of which were on goal.
Kent State gets back into conference play on Saturday (Oct. 12) as they host Central Michigan at noon in their Shoot Out Parkinson's game.
