Kent State (5-1) seeks its third victory in as many nights when it hosts Niagara (1-3) at the M.A.C. Center Saturday night in the final game of the 2013 Coaches vs. Cancer Classic.
The Golden Flashes made history just one night ago by making 18 three-pointers to break the previous record of 16 set by the 2002 Elite Eight team. Junior Devareaux Manley had a career night as he made 7-of-10 three-point attempts for a game-high 21 points. Junior Derek Jackson and senior Darren Goodson both shot 3-for-5 from long range on their way to 15 points and 12 points, respectively. Goodson also added six assists.
They needed every one of those shots to hold off a talented USC Upstate squad. Junior Kris Brewer's free throw with 5.1 seconds to play was the difference for a 79-78 Kent State victory. It was another tough night offensively for Brewer. But just as he did at Temple a week ago, Brewer came through with a big play for his team down the stretch.
Jackson scored layup off a beautiful backdoor cut to put the Flashes ahead 47-37 with18:19 remaining. USC Upstate responded with an 11-0 run to take the lead as the Flashes went cold from the floor. Kent State went nearly 10 minutes without a field goal, as Jackson delivered a three-pointer with 8:53 to play.
Niagara is looking for its first win during its stay in Kent this weekend. The Purple Eagles' lone victory of the season came over Mid-American Conference member Buffalo last week. Guard Antoine Mason is the nation's leading scorer at 31.3 ppg and is coming off a 35-point performance against Western Carolina last night. Niagara allows 86.2 ppg, which is the 13th-most in the country.
Quick Flashes
• Kent State is a subregional site for the 2013 Coaches vs. Cancer Classic and will host six games over three nights in a doubleheader format. Including the three games as part of the tournament, the Flashes are scheduled to play a record 18 games at the M.A.C Center.
• A balanced scoring attack has been key to the Flashes' early success with at least 10 players score in five of the first six games this season.
• The Flashes are getting huge bench contributions and have received 21 or more points from their reserves in each game. They are outscoring the opposing bench by an average of 25.2-14.0.
• KSU has made 50 three-point field goals on the season, which is tied for 7th nationally.
• The Flashes are averaging just 8.5 turnovers per game, which is 6th-fewest in the nation.
