Kent, Ohio – For the full 40 minutes, Sunday (Feb. 10) afternoon's contest looked like it could be Kent State's (3-20, 1-9) next win. However, Northern Illinois (7-16, 2-8) was able to make shots when it counted to come out with the 52-47 victory.
Although never being able to take the lead through the first half, the Flashes never trailed by more than nine points in the opening 20 minutes. They found themselves down by just three points at the half.
Kent State came out of the locker room recharged, just like they have in last few games, to take a two-point lead with 13:45 left in the game. Unfortunately, in what head coach Danielle O'Banion called a "game of inches," the Huskies were able to make the plays they needed to down the stretch to walk away with the victory.
The Flashes tied their season second-best, shooting 86.7% from the free throw line in 15 attempts. They also had less than 20 turnovers for the eighth time this season. Perhaps the deciding factor in the game, Northern Illinois was able to make five of their 13 attempted three-pointers whereas Kent State missed all of their eight shots from beyond the arc.
Tamzin Barroilhet continued to lead the Flashes with 15 points, six rebounds and two assists. In her first game back after suffering an injury on December 30, Diamon Beckford came up big off the bench, scoring ten and grabbing four rebounds in 21 minutes on the floor. Ashley Evans finished with nine points, three rebounds, three assists and three steals.
Amanda Corral scored 18 points for the Huskies with eight rebounds and four assists. Ashley Sneed had 13 points, and Jenna Thorp scored 11 with seven rebounds.
Kent State has the week off to recover and rejuvenate before traveling to Toledo for a 2:00 pm contest on Saturday (Feb. 16).
