Durham, N.C. – USA Baseball has named senior infielder George Roberts to its pre-season Golden Spikes Award Watch List, as announced Thursday (Feb. 14). The Watch List recognizes the top 50 players in the country that will vie for the coveted Golden Spikes Award, given to the top player in the county at the end of the season.
The list, comprised by USA Baseball officials and advisors, is a "rolling" list, enabling players to earn their way on or off, depending on their on-field performance. The mid-season, 60-man list will be released on May 2, with the 2013 winner presented live on the MLB Network on July 18.
Roberts led the Golden Flashes in batting average (.364), RBI (66) and slugging percentage (.549) in 2012. He also scored 45 runs and hit 23 doubles and eight homeruns. He led the Mid-American Conference with 31 RBI in conference play, while batting .393 on his way to being named MAC Player of the Year and Louisville Slugger Second Team All-American.
Already in 2013, Roberts has been recognized as the College Sports Madness Pre-Season Conference Field Player of the Year, College Sports Madness Pre-Season Second Team All-American and a Louisville Slugger Pre-Season First Team All-American.
