Johnson, Guida Named MAC Co-Gymnast, Specialist of the Week

The Mid-American Conference announced Wednesday (Feb. 27) that Kent State gymnasts Whitnee Johnson (Colombia, Mo.) and Rachel Guida(Cumberland, R.I.) have been named Co-Gymnast and Specialist of the Week, respectively.
Johnson helped lead Kent State to victory over Northern Illinois 195.800-194.350. Johnson took the all-around scoring a 39.150, a personal best, to beat the rest of the competition. Johnson placed second on the uneven bars to start the day by earning a 9.825. Next up on the vault, Johnson took third for her score of 9.800. She then received a 9.825 on the balance beam, which was good for second place. Johnson's final score of the day came on the floor exercise where she brought home a 9.700, finishing ninth in the event.
Guida took home two event victories in helping Kent State defeat Northern Illinois 195.800-194.350. On the vault Guida set a new career best when she received a 9.875 from the judges. The score was good for first place overall. Guida took on the uneven bars next; her routine would earn her a 9.900, once again good enough for a first place finish.

The award is Guida's third of the season and Johnson's first. It marks the third time Kent State gymnasts have taken home both awards in the same week.
The Golden Flashes return to action Friday (Mar. 1) as they host Ball State at 7:00 pm in the annual Flip for the Cure event.
