The Mid-American Conference announced Tuesday night that seven Golden Flashes received spots on the 2013 All-MAC teams, as voted on by the conference coaches. George Roberts, Taylor Williams and Brian Clark were named to the first team while Derek Toadvine, Sawyer Polen, Evan Campbell and Tyler Skulina were named to the second team.
Kent State leads all schools with seven winners. The Golden Flashes have had at least five players named All-MAC in seven in the last eight years.
Roberts earned the first baseman First Team spot after hitting .353 with 12 doubles, two triples and two homeruns with 39 RBI. He slugged .507 and had an on-base percentage of .466 with nine stolen bases in 42 games, all as a starter. He also was named All-MAC First Team and MAC Player of the Year in 2012, as well as being named a pre-season All-American by numerous outlets in 2013.
Williams led the Flashes with a 9-1 record and 2.35 ERA on the season as the ace on the mound. He struck out 100 batters while only issuing 17 walks through 99.2 innings pitched, including three complete games. Williams was named MAC East Pitcher of the Week four times throughout the season.
Rounding out the First Team honors for Kent State, closer Brian Clark has accumulated ten saves to lead the Flashes' bullpen. His ERA sits at 1.42 with a 2-2 record. Clark has recorded 33 strikeouts in a team-high 23 appearances. Clark was named to the Second Team a year ago and also received Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American honors in 2012.
This is Toadvine's first All-MAC honor. He was named to the All-NCAA Championship Austin Region Team as a freshman in 2011. The award is the first for Polen, who was named MAC East Player of the Week for the fourth week of the season. Campbell was named to the Second All-MAC Team in 2012 and 2010 and was also named to the All-MAC Tournament Team in 2011. Skulina was a pre-season All-American this season and was also a Second Team All-Mac honoree in 2012.
Kent State begins the fight for a fifth-straight MAC Tournament title Wednesday night as they take on Central Michigan at 7:30pm at All Pro Freight Stadium in Avon, Ohio.
