
Kent State Rolls 6-2 in First Victory of the Season

HARRISONBURG, Va. – Kent State (1-1) put on a gritty performance to take down Appalachian State (0-2) by a score of 6-2 on Sunday (Sept. 1) afternoon.
"We had a really good team performance today," said Head Coach Kathleen Wiler. "I'm happy to put some goals in the back of the net, and I was pleased with the hard work."
Jenna McHale started off the scoring for the Golden Flashes at the 27:47 mark off a corner and Rebecca Lee followed with a score at 32:59 to give Kent State a 2-0 lead at the half. Lee's goal came off an assist by Alexis Madeira.
Kent State kept their feet on the gas in the second, starting with a break away goal by Alyssa McFerren, assisted by Caroline Corthouts. After Appalachian State netted their first score of the contest at the 50:20 mark, Melanie Kahn answered right back two minutes later to make the Kent State lead 4-1.
The Golden Flashes rounded out their offense with back-to-back goals by Alexis Madeira and Shannon Martin, both unassisted, to cap off the win.
Jahna Jordan spent all 70 minutes in goal, recording six saves.
Overall, Kent State outshot Appalachian State 37-15 in the match. Lee led the team with seven shots, while Julia Hofmann and McFerren followed with five each.
