Game Notes (.pdf)
Kent State (9-5, 0-1) hosts Ball State (3-9, 0-1) Saturday evening at the M.A.C. Center in a matchup of two teams in search of their first Mid-American Conference win of the season.
The Golden Flashes have lost four of their last five games after an 8-1 start to the season. A team with a high-powered offense and excellent depth during the first month of the season has been missing in action over the past month. The Flashes' offense averaged 81.5 ppg and shot 47-percent in November, but is scoring just 62.7 ppg on 36-percent shooting.
Despite shooting just 28-percent (17/60) in Wednesday's 59-53 loss to Ohio, the Flashes were in the game until the final seconds. Junior Devareaux Manley led the way with 13 points and senior Mark Henniger added 12 points and seven rebounds, but was limited to just 20 minutes due to foul trouble.
Junior Kris Brewer leads the Flashes at 11.5 ppg on the season and had a season-high seven assists against Ohio. Fellow juniors Derek Jackson (10.9 ppg) and Manley (9.6 ppg) join Brewer to form one of the MAC's top starting backcourts. The duo has combined to make 48 three-pointers and Jackson leads the team with 24 steals.
Henniger is putting together a terrific senior season, averaging 9.2 ppg and 5.8 rpg. Henniger played well against one of the MAC's premier post players in Maurice Ndour on Wednesday. Senior Darren Goodson, who was moved to the bench two games ago, averages 9.9 ppg and a team-best 2.7 apg.
Ball State dropped its conference opener to Akron, 72-68, and has dropped eight straight against Division I schools. Forward Chris Bond led the way with 18 points and seven rebounds. The Cardinals defeated SE Missouri State on Nov. 18 and also owns wins over Taylor (NAIA) and Oakland City (NCCAA).
Senior F/C Majok Majok is the nation's 9th-leading rebounder (10.8 rpg) and is tied for the MAC lead with six double-doubles on the season.
5'9" Zavier Turner has been terrific for the Cardinals and is one of the leading candidates for the league's Freshman of the Year award at this point in the season. Turner leads all freshmen in scoring at 12.8 ppg and is sixth in the conference in assists (4.1 apg). He leads the MAC in free throw shooting (.971) and three-pointers (2.3/gm) while shooting 45-percent from long range.
Freshman Mark Alstork has averaged 10.2 ppg since being inserted into the starting lineup five games ago and is second in the MAC in three-point shooting (.483).
