HAMPTON, Va. - Junior Tyler Small accounted for two of Kent State's five pins Friday as the Golden Flashes went 2-0 and earned a spot in the Virginia Duals semifinals at Hampton Coliseum. As the tournament's fifth seed, Kent State defeated The Citadel 28-12 in the opening round, before topping fourth-seeded Bloomsburg 27-12 in the quarterfinals.
"When you don't let up, good things are going to happen," Head Coach Jim Andrassy said of the five pins. "We just did a good job of wrestling through moves and situations."
Bloomsburg, who was No. 22 in this week's coaches poll, jumped out to a 3-0 lead, before sophomore Mack McGuire won a pivotal swing match in overtime over Nick Wilcox. Tied 1-1 after regulation, McGuire got in on a single-leg shot and finished it off for the 3-1 decision in sudden victory.
"Mack lost a close one against (Wilcox) last year, so he knew what to expect" Andrassy said. "And he just wrestled real solid throughout the entire match."
Small followed with a first period pin of Matt Rappo, giving the Flashes a 9-3 lead. And the Huskies never recovered.
Sophomore Michael DePalma jumped out to a lead over Bryce Busler, before winning by medical default.
Sophomore Ian Miller then planted Brian Nelson in the second period, giving Kent State a 21-3 advantage. It was Miller's ninth pin of the season.
Junior Caleb Marsh and sophomore Sam Wheeler each completed 2-0 days with 3-1 and 6-5 decisions against the Huskies respectively.
Marsh and Wheeler also helped the Flashes overcome a 12-9 deficit after six matches against The Citadel. Marsh started a string of four straight KSU victories with a 4-0 blanking of Terrell Forbes. Wheeler followed with a 15-3 major decision of Ken Radford to give the Flashes a 16-12 lead.
"After we lost at 149, we knew that could get us into a hole," Andrassy said of the opening round. "But Sam's match made us feel more comfortable. He wrestled really well in his first match."
Sophomore Cole Baxter and redshirt freshman Mimmo Lytle closed out Kent State's first round win with back-to-back falls.
No. 13 Virginia earned the tournament's top seed and downed Chattanooga 18-13 in the quarterfinals for the right to face the Golden Flashes Saturday at 2 p.m. Earlier this season the Cavaliers topped Kent State 29-12, winning four tight matches (125, 133, 141, 157).
"That may have been our worst performance of the season," Andrassy said of the opening weekend loss to Virginia. "And I think we're a lot better now. Two years ago Missouri beat us early in the season and we ended up beating them here a little later in the year. We traditionally wrestle well here and I think we have the ability to do the same type of thing this year. "
