KENT, Ohio- The Kent State women's soccer team lost a hard fought 1-0 contest to Central Michigan Sunday afternoon at Zoeller Field. The loss dropped Kent State's record to 9-6-3 overall and 4-4-2 in Mid-American Conference play. The Chippewas improved to 6-11-1 and 4-6-0 in league action.
Jennifer Gassman scored the lone goal of the game in the 65th minute off a set piece. The Chippewas earned a free kick 25-yards from the goal on the left side. Emily Basten played the free kick into the 18-yard box where Samantha Maher was able to direct a pass to Gassman who headed it into the back of the net.
Kent State outshot Central Michigan 15-11 and outworked the Chippewas for a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks but could not even the score.
Following the Central Michigan goal Kent State had a number of good chances and battled hard. At the 23:30 mark of the second-half the Flashes earned back-to-back corner kicks and on the second corner kick caught an unlucky break.
Madison Helterbran played the corner in the from the right side and Stephanie Haugh, on the left side of the six-yard box struck a one-timer that hit the left post.
With nine minutes remaining Jenna Hellstom had a shot from 12 yards out go just over the crossbar. The Golden Flashes had one more quality chance to even the score in the waning seconds of the game.
Kent State earned a corner kick from the left corner with 15 seconds remaining. Hellstrom played the corner short to Haugh who took dribbled towards goal and fired from 15 yards out on the left side. Haugh's shot narrowly went over the crossbar and leaping Central Michigan goalkeeper Heather Laeufer.
Kent State plays its final game of the regular season on Thursday, October 30 when it plays Ohio University at 3 p.m. at Ohio
