KALAMAZOO, Mich.- The Kent State women's soccer team defeated Western Michigan, 3-1, on Sunday afternoon at the WMU Soccer Complex. The win improves Kent State to 7-3-2 overall with a 2-1-1 record in the Mid-American Conference, while the Broncos dropped to 8-4 with a 2-2-0 mark in league play.
After a 1-1 double overtime draw vs. Northern Illinois on Friday evening, the Golden Flashes came out hot this afternoon against western division favorite, Western Michigan. Kent State tallied the first goal of the game just 7:27 into the game on a counter off a corner kick. Junior Stephanie Senn (Grand Island, N.Y.) collected the WMU service and got the ball to sophomore forward Jenna Hellstrom (Sudbury, Ontario). Hellstrom found senior forward Stephanie Haugh who scored to give the Golden Flashes an early 1-0 edge.
Western Michigan evened the score less than five minutes later when Rachel Chaney stole the ball at midfield and put one past Senn at the 12:18 mark. Once again, the Flashes came back to take a 2-1 lead at 16:20 when sophomore Abbie Lawson (Stow, Ohio) fed Hellstrom the ball, who then beat both her defender and the goalkeeper.
The Broncos had a 7-2 advantage in shots and a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks in the first period. Senn was busy in goal for the Golden Flashes, tallying six saves.
Kent State maintained control of the ball throughout most of the second period, and had a 6-2 lead in shots. After WMU midfielder Kylie Nylen was ejected in in the 68th minute after a hard foul to Lawson, Kent State tacked on a third goal in the 73rd when senior midfielder Renee Loya (Penn Hill, Pa.) blasted a shot in from 20-yards out in the right corner of the net.
Senn picked up eight saves in goal for the Golden Flashes and earned the win in net to improve to 7-3-2. WMU goalkeeper Kaitlyn Collin earned three saves in goal and dropped to 3-4-0. WMU ended the game with a 9-8 lead in shots, and a commanding 12-2 lead in corner kicks.
Kent State is back in action this weekend when it hosts Miami University (OH) at 4 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 10 and Ball State at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 12.
