Flashes Travel to Ball State for MAC Quarterfinals

KENT, Ohio- The fifth-seeded Kent State women's soccer team hits the road for the first round of the Mid-American Conference tournament. The Golden Flashes will take on the fourth-seeded Ball State cardinals at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 2 at the Briner Sports Complex. LAST TIME OUT
In the final game of the regular season, the Flashes defeated Ohio University in overtime, 3-2, on Thursday, Oct. 30 in Athens. Sophomore Abbie Lawson scored the first goal of the game at 12:57, but the Bobcats came back with two goals to take a 2-1 lead in the first period.  Sophomore Jenna Hellstrom evened the score in the 59th minute, and with just 30 seconds left in the overtime period, junior Madison Helterbran tallied the golden goal.Â
ABOUT THE FLASHES
Kent State finished third in the MAC East Dividion behind Buffalo and Miami. Kent State has tallied 28 goals this season, just one fewer than Ball State. Hellstrom leads the offense with 20 points (7g, 6a), which ranks third in the Mid-American Conference.  Senior Stephanie Haugh, a recent CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-District selection, leads the Golden Flashes and the MAC in assists with seven. Haugh has also added four goals for a combined 15 points. Junior goalkeeper Stephanie Senn has started in all 19 games and has allowed just 16 goals (0.80 gaa) and has recorded 87 saves (.845).
SCOUTING THE CARDINALS
Ball State lost its final regular season game, 4-1, to the Miami Redhawks on Thursday to drop to 10-6-2 and 6-5 in the MAC. Sophomore Gabby Veldman leads the Cardinals in points (12) on four goals and four assists, followed by Leah Mattingly with 11 points (4 g, 3 a). Brooke Dennis has a 6-4-2 record in goal for the Cardinals and has four shutouts. In 13 games played, she has allowed 12 goals and has 56 saves.  Sharing time in goal is Alyssa Heintschel, who is 4-2 on the year. She has allowed eight goals (1.11 gaa) and has 37 saves (.822). Heintschel was in goal earlier this year when Ball State defeated Kent State, 1-0.  Ball State is outscoring opponents 29-20, and also leads 76-70 in corner kicks.
THE RECORDS
Sunday will be the 18th meeting between Kent State and Ball State, as the Cardinals lead the all-time series 9-6-2. Prior to the loss to the Cardinals earlier this season, Kent State had won the previous six meetings. The last time Kent State met Ball State in the MAC Tournament was in the 2012 quarterfinals when the Flashes defeated the Cardinals, 4-0.
The winner of Sunday's game will advance to meet the winner of another quarterfinal game between No. 1 seed Buffalo and No. 8 seed Toledo. The top remaining seed at the conclusion of Sunday's four quarterfinals games will host the semifinals and finals next weekend.
