ATHENS, Ohio โ One night after winning a Mid-American Conference Tournament match for the first time since 2007, No. 7 Kent State saw its season come to an end with a 3-0 (18-25, 17-25, 18-25) loss to No. 3 Miami in a quarterfinal matchup Saturday evening at the Convocation Center.
Kent State (17-14) was led on offense by middle blockers Liz Reikow and Bridget Wilhelm. Reikow tied for the match lead with 12 kills on just 25 attempts with two errors for a .400 hitting percentage, while Wilhelm added seven kills. Freshman Brittney Jakscht finshed with 29 assists.
Down a player due to an injury in Friday's win over Eastern Michigan, the Golden Flashes could not get anything going at the pin and the team hit just .149 for the match. Miami hit at a .349 clip and had three players record double-figure kills while hitting .400 or better.
Freshman Kelsey Bittinger led all players with 15 digs. Freshman Challen Geraghty tallied nine digs, while Jakscht was right behind with eight digs. Reikow added a match-high four total blocks at the net.
Third-year head coach Don Gromala led Kent State to its most successful season since 2007, which was the last time the program had a winning record and won a MAC Tournament match. The Flashes had All-MAC honorees for the first time since 2010, as seniors Liz Reikow and Tinuke Aderemi-Ibitola were second team selections. Additionally, libero Challen Geraghty was the first Golden Flashes to be named to the MAC All-Freshman Team since 2009.ย
