COLUMBUS – Kent State bowed out of the NWCA National Duals Monday with a 24-13 setback against No. 18 Illinois inside St. John Arena. The Fighting Illini took 6-of-10 matches, including a come-from-behind victory at 133 and an overtime win at heavyweight.
Junior Caleb Marsh improved to 3-0 on the weekend with a 9-6 victory over No. 25 Tony Dallago. Marsh opened his match with a four-point move, followed by a takedown in the second and a reversal in the third.
"Caleb is starting to attack more," Head Coach Jim Andrassy said. He beat two ranked guys this weekend. He'll be moving up the rankings and getting close to bringing an NCAA spot to the MAC Tournament. "
The Flashes also got wins from junior Tyler Small and sophomores Ian Miller and Cole Baxter. Miller gave Kent State its only bonus points with a 15-5 major decision. The only points Miller surrendered came on escapes.
"Ian's been wrestling a little different," Andrassy said. "He's a little more conservative than what he used to be, but I think it's helping him."
Small did his work from the top position, with a two-point turn on a cradle and a three-point tilt in the second period. Riding time gave him a 7-2 victory over Steven Rodrigues. But the Flashes were unable to make up for Illinois' early 9-0 lead.
Defending NCAA champion Jesse Delgado set the tone for Illinois with a third period pin of Del Vinas to start the day. Zane Richards then overcame a 3-1 deficit in the third period to down sophomore Mack McGuire 7-5.
"Mack can outwrestle just about anybody in the first two periods," Andrassy said. "But he's had problems wrestling in the third period this year."
Baxter trailed Jeff Koepke 4-2 to start the third period, but an escape quickly followed by a takedown and a rideout gave Baxter the 5-4 win.
Redshirt freshman Mimmo Lytle suffered a 3-2 overtime loss as Chris Lopez was able to hang on to Lytle's ankle for a rideout during the tiebreaker period.
Kent State will close out its regular season Friday night (Feb. 21), hosting No. 10 Missouri and No. 14 Edinboro.
