Game Notes (.pdf)
Kent State (15-12, 6-8) travels to Bowling Green for a 7 p.m. contest Wednesday night at the Stroh Center. The Golden Flashes have won three of their last four, while the Falcons have dropped five of their last six.
The two teams met just two weeks ago when Devareaux Manley sank a game-winning three-point shot from the corner with 0.9 remaining in the Flashes' 62-61 victory.
Close games have become the norm for both schools over the past month. The first matchup capped a stretch for Kent State in which five of six games where the outcome was not determined until the final possession of regulation. Meanwhile, Bowling Green has played five straight games that have come down to the final possession.
Head coach Rob Senderoff and his Golden Flashes will look to bounce back following a 78-69 setback to Buffalo on Saturday that ended a three-game winning streak. Junior Kris Brewer (12.1 ppg) has played a large role in the Flashes' recent success and is excelling in his new role off the bench. Over the past three games, Brewer has averaged 19.3 points per game and shot 68 percent (13-for-19) from the three-point line.
Junior guard Derek Jackson is second on the team in scoring (11.3 ppg) and is among the MAC's leaders in steals (50) and three-point shooting (.391). Senior forward Darren Goodson provides versatility and averages 9.7 points, 3.9 rebounds and 2.5 assists on the season.
Sophomores Kellon Thomas (6.0 ppg) and Chris Ortiz (4.1 ppg) moved into the starting unit a few weeks ago and have increased their production in recent games. The duo is combining for more than 20 points per game over the past three games, and both players scored a career-high 17 points against Central Michigan on Feb. 15.
Bowling Green (11-16, 5-9) has lost five of its last six and enters off a 55-52 home loss at Miami on Sunday. The Falcons score just 63.3 points per game, which is the second-lowest average in the MAC, but are one of the best defensive teams in the league. They are among the nation's top 40 schools in scoring defense (63.6 ppg), steals (8.0 spg) and blocked shots (5.5 bpg).
Junior forward Richaun Holmes and senior center Cameron Black help protect the paint. Holmes is second in the conference with 2.8 blocks per game and Blacks adds 1.5 blocks per game, which is tied for fifth. Both players grab 7.6 rebounds per game to rank in the top 5 in the conference. Holmes also scores 13.4 points per game to lead the Falcons.
On the perimeter, sophomore guards Anthony Henderson (2.2 spg) and Jehvon Clarke (1.9 spg) are among the top 4 in the MAC in steals. Henderson averages 11.1 points per game, while Clarke leads the team in scoring (13.0 ppg) and assists (5.1 apg) in MAC games.
Sophomore forward Spencer Parker add 12.9 points per game, but no other Falcon averages more than 3.6 points. All five starters average more than 30 minutes per game in league play, as Bowling Green's bench contributes just 4.4 points per game.
