Seven-Run First Inning Gives Flashes Home Opener Victory

KENT, Ohio – Even with a shortened six-inning game due to rain in Kent State's (9-8) home opener on Wednesday night (Mar. 19), the Golden Flashes were able to take a 10-2 victory over Youngstown State (9-8) thanks to a big seven-run first inning.
The game was the first played at Schoonover Stadium after 16-straight on the road to begin the season.
"It's very nice to stay home and not have to get on a bus or a flight," said Head Coach Jeff Duncan. "It's good to be in our home locker room and put on that home uniform."
A leadoff walk by Jon Wilson started the offense for the Flashes in the initial frame. After he advanced on a groundout and wild pitch, Wilson scored the game's first run on a fielding error by the center fielder on a fly ball off the bat of Justin Wagler. Zarley Zalewski then ripped a double to score another.
With two outs, T.J. Sutton drove Zalewski in on a base hit up the middle before Tommy Monnot smacked a double to left center. It became a 5-0 game when Conner Simonetti kept things going with the help of another Youngstown State error.
With bases loaded, the top of the order came up again as Wilson tripled to empty the bases, making it a 7-0 Kent State lead after one inning.
The Golden Flashes scored a big run in the 3rd when Simonetti hit a shot over the wall in left center to grab the first homerun of his young career and the first home run for the team this season.
"That was huge for him," Duncan said. "For him to do what he did today was a lot of fun to watch."
They added two more in the 5th on a base hit by Curtis Olvey and another RBI single by Sutton.
Andy Ravel had a great game in the start on the mound for Kent State in his Schoonover Stadium debut. The freshman earned his second win of the season after five innings of work while three hits, no runs, one walk and four strikeouts. His classmate Jared Skolnicki followed him and pitched one inning with two hits, no earned runs and a strikeout.
Five Golden Flashes picked up multi-hit days in the shortened game. Zalewski stayed hot with a two doubles in as many at-bats. Sutton and Wilson led with two RBI each.
Mid-American Conference play begins for Kent State this weekend as Toledo comes to Schoonover Stadium for a 2:30pm double-header on Friday followed by a 1:00pm finale on Saturday.
