
Gymnastics Takes Second at MAC Championships

YPSILANTI, Mich. – Kent State finished the 2014 Mid-American Conference Championships in second place with a score of 195.125, Sat., March 22 at the Eastern Michigan Convocation Center.
Head Coach Brice Biggin took home his ninth Coach of the Year award, marking Kent State's 11th overall, as the Golden Flashes landed three individual champions in their second place finish at the championships.
"I am very happy with the team and the way we competed, the effort from the them was really good today," Coach Biggin stated.
Senior Marie Case was named the MAC Senior Gymnast of the Year and the Gymnast of the Year, which is the third straight season that she has been selected gymnast of the year.
"I just want to congratulate Marie on her Senior of the Year and Gymnast of the Year and how she competed today," Biggin mentioned, "She dominated the competion in a manner I have never seen before."
Case was crowned as the MAC Champion in the All-Around (39.500) for the second straight year. She was named the champion on Balance Beam (9.900) and co-champion on Vault (9.850). Case rounded out her last MAC Championship with a second place finish on the uneven bars (9.900) and tied for third on the floor, 9.850.
Sophomore Rebecca Osmer set her career-high on the bars (9.900), while she was in a four-way tie for second with Case.
The Golden Flashes now have a total of 13 vault champions, 11 balance beam champions, six all-around champions (Case is a two time champion), four senior gymnast of the year and five gymnast of the year (Case is a three-time winner) winners.
Central Michigan won their 15th MAC Championship with a final score of 196.475. The Flashes were in second (195.125) followed by Bowling Green (194.625) Nothern Illinois (194.150), Ball State (193.975), Eastern Michigan (193.850) and Western Michigan (191.575).
Kent State was named MAC Regular season champions with a perfect 6-0 record in dual competition.
"We couldn't be more proud of the way the girls handled themselves this season and look forward to the NCAA Regionals in two weeks."
Next up for the Golden Flashes is the first round of the NCAA Division I tournament on April 5. Qualifying teams and sites will be announced Monday, March 24.
