Seventh-Inning Rally Not Enough as Flashes Fall to Tennessee Tech

ATHENS, Ga. – Kent State's rally in the bottom of the seventh inning came up short Sunday morning as the Golden Flashes lost to Tennessee Tech, 5-2, to finish 2-3 at the weekend's UGA Softball Classic.
"We came out a little flat today and could not put hits together," head coach Karen Linder said of her team, which had more than one hit in just one inning.
Facing a 5-0 hole heading into their final at-bat, the Flashes (10-7) continued to battle. Freshman Brooke Dodson delivered a pinch-hit single in her first collegiate at-bat to get things started. Sophomore Chloe Kesterson followed with a pinch-hit home run to center to make it 5-2 with no outs. It was also the first hit of Kesterson's college career.
The Flashes were unable to sustain the rally and the next three hitters were retired on groundouts.
Kent State collected seven hits in the game. Junior Dani Ramos went 2-for-3 to lead the way. Sophomore Arika Roush joined Dodson and Kesterson in recording her first collegiate hit.
"I was happy that we had some kids come through with pinch-hits. Chloe, Arika and Brooke all took advantage of their opportunity and gave us a spark."
Alyssa Richards put the Golden Eagles ahead with a two-run homer in the top of the first inning. After loading the bases with three singles in the second, Tennessee Tech drew a walk and singled score two in a three-run inning.
In her second collegiate start, freshman Janel Hayes (1-1) allowed five runs on six hits in 1.2 innings of work. Junior Emma Johnson threw 4.1 scoreless innings in relief. Johnson had eight strikeouts and allowed just two hits. Hannah Weaver (3-6) earned the complete game victory for Tennessee Tech. Weaver had two strikeouts and allowed seven hits.
Kent State will return to action with a challenging four-game schedule at the Louisville Classic (March 14-15).
