Marie Case Heads to the NCAA Gymnastics Championships this Weekend

Kent State senior Marie Case (Erie, Pa.) travels to Birmingham, Ala. this weekend Fri., April 18-Sun., April 20 to compete in the NCAA National Gymnastics Championships as an individual qualifier in the All-Around.

Heading to the National Championships …
Case qualified at the NCAA Baton Rouge Regional with an All-Around score of 39.325, as she tied for fifth. To qualify as an individual, a gymnast had to finish in the top two places individually in each event after the top two teams advancing were removed. She completed her last regional with scores of 9.900 (floor), 9.850 (beam), 9.800 (vault) and a 9.775 (bars).
Case will compete in the All-Around, as the only MAC gymnast as an individual in the All-Around and will rotate with the UCLA gymnastics team on Friday's competition. The rotation order for UCLA and Marie on Friday in semifinal II at 7 p.m., 1: Balance Beam, 2: Bye, 3: Floor, 4: Vault, 5: Bye, 6: Uneven Bars.
Case becomes the sixth Golden Flash to participate as an individual in the All-Around at Nationals – 1994: Shelly Stambaugh took 44th (37.325), 1996: Shelly Stambaugh took 19th (38.975) and Shannon Gallagher tied for 32nd (38.600), 1997: Michelle Naessig tied for 28th (38.825), 2002: Heather Langham took 14th (38.975) and 2009: Christina Lenny took 24th (38.400). This is Case's first appearance as an individual at the National Championships, but appeared on the 2011 team that advanced to the Championships where she scored a 39.025 in the All-Around.
Case on Lead for the Flashes All Season…
Case has led the Golden Flashes, 17-8, all season as she has set her career-highs in four-of-five events this season – Vault (9.950) at Pittsburgh with Centenary on March 15th, and all three - Bars (9.925), Floor (9.975) and All-Around (39.600) when Kent State defeated Bowling Green for the MAC regular season title on March 6th. She also tied her career-high on the beam this season with a 9.925 in the win over Central Michigan on February 16.
In the meet against Bowling Green, Case's All-Around score, 39.600 moved her as Kent State's All-Time Points Leader, and has since added with a current total of 1,768.925.
Seasonal Accolades …
The Erie, Pa. native was named the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches/Women Central Region Co-Gymnast of the Year after the regional in Baton Rouge, La. Case also was tabbed the Mid-American Conference Senior Gymnast of the Year and picked up her third straight Gymnast of the Year.
Case was selected to the First Team All-Conference following her performance at the MAC Championships where she was crowned the champion on the balance beam (9.900) and in the All-Around (39.500) while she was co-champion on the vault (9.850).
