CLEVELAND, Ohio - Kent State junior Emma Johnson was named Mid-American Conference East Division Pitcher of the Week, the conference office announced Monday (April 21).
Johnson threw 12.2 scoreless innings and a pair of shutouts on her way to earning 3 victories in as many appearances to improve to 12-7 on the season. She had 18 strikeouts and allowed just three hits.
The reigning MAC Pitcher of the Year got the weekend started with a no-hitter in the Golden Flashes' 13-0 Game 1 victory over Toledo on Friday. Johnson recorded nine strikeouts and retired the final 13 batters of the game. Only a walk in the first inning prevented her from achieving a perfect game.
Johnson nearly matched that performance on Saturday, holding a Bowling Green offense that exploded for 18 runs in Friday's sweep of Buffalo to only two hits while recording six punch-outs. It was her fourth shutout of the season.
Following a three-run homer that cut Kent State's lead to 6-4 in the fourth, Johnson entered Sunday's game and retired the first two batters to end the Falcons' hopes of a rally. She pitched the final 2.2 innings and allowed just one hit while striking out three batters.
Kent State (21-15, 7-3 MAC) plays a non-conference doubleheader at Cleveland State on Tuesday before returning to MAC play this weekend cross-divisional games at Northern Illinois and Western Michigan.
