KALAMAZOO, Mich. — Freshman Maddy Grimm tied the Kent State single-season record with her 13th home run of the year in the third inning of a scoreless game at Western Michigan Saturday, which the Golden Flashes went on to win 3-0.
Sophomore Erika Warren drove in Kent State's other two runs. Warren hit a sac fly to score senior Abbey Ledford in the fourth inning and added an RBI single that scored sophomore Arika Roush in the sixth inning.
Junior Emma Johnson (14-8) was terrific once again in the pitcher's circle for the Flashes. Johnson recorded her fifth shutout of the season and allowed only two hits while striking out seven batters.
"Today was a good win for us," head coach Karen Linder said. "Emma [Johnson] pitched well and our defense did a great job. The top of our order was better and Erika Warren came through with two big RBI."
With the win, Kent State (23-16, 9-4) sits atop the Mid-American Conference East Division standings with three regular season games remaining.
Kent State will look to sweep Western Michigan tomorrow at 1 p.m.
