KALAMAZOO, Mich. — A pair of home runs provided all of the offense Kent State needed to defeat Western Michigan, 3-1, Sunday afternoon at Ebert Field. The Golden Flashes (24-16, 10-4 MAC) have won eight of their last nine games.
Western Michigan struck first on a Melissa Palmer solo home run in the bottom of the third inning.
Kent State answered and took the lead in its next at-bat. Senior Abbey Ledford put the Flashes on top with a two-run homer that scored junior Kim Kirkpatrick, who doubled to lead off the inning.
Sophomore Erika Warren added a solo home run in the fifth. Warren, who finished the day with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate, has now hit safely in six straight games.
Kent State had nine hits in the game. Kirkpatrick and sophomore Lauren Kesterson also had two hits apiece.
Freshman Ronnie Ladines threw a complete game to improve to 6-5 on the season. Ladines had seven strikeouts and allowed one run on five hits.
With the win, Kent State (24-16, 10-4) leads the Mid-American Conference East Division entering the final weekend of the regular season.
