Kent State Drops Series Opening Doubleheader to Ohio

KENT – Kent State Softball (17-24, 7-12 MAC) dropped both games of a doubleheader on Friday afternoon to begin their series against Ohio University. The Golden Flashes dropped the first contest by a 13-5 final, and the second 10-1. Both games ended in five innings via run rule.

Game 1: Kent State 5, Ohio 13

The Golden Flashes showed early fight, jumping in front 2-1 after the first inning. Caleigh Shaulis reached on a hit by pitch and Megan Claerhout singled her to second before Ashlyn Porter delivered an RBI single to score Shaulis. Gabby Quinn then doubled to left field to score Claerhout and give Kent State a 2-1 lead.

The Flashes added two more in the second to briefly make it a 7-4 ballgame. Brooke Aberle singled and Aaralyn Nogay drew a walk before Brynn Libler came through with a two-RBI single scoring both Aberle and Nogay.

Kent State's fifth run came in the third. Porter reached on a hit by pitch, and after Quinn reached on a fielder's choice and stole second, she scored on a catching error to make it 11-5.

Quinn finished with a double and an RBI, while Porter contributed a hit and a run scored. Libler's two-run single in the second.

Game 2: Kent State 1, Ohio 10

Ohio scored in four of five innings to put the game out of reach early.

Kent State managed just one run coming in the fourth inning. Caleigh Shaulis led off with a bunt single, Megan Claerhout followed with a single to put two on, and after Ashlyn Porter grounded out to advance the runners Gabby Quinn reached on a fielder's choice to score Shaulis getting KSU on the board.

Shaulis had a solid day at the plate across both games, reaching base multiple times and scoring the Flashes' lone run in Game 2. Nogay and Aberle each had hits in the second game to provide some bright spots for the Blue and Gold.
