"Over the past three years this event has grown substantially, both in attendance and in the number of items donated for the event," said Director of Athletics Joel Nielsen. "Through the efforts of our organizing committee and staff, this event has provided resources that support and enhance the student-athlete experience."
Featuring both a live and silent auction that boasted over 100 items, including trips to Orlando (Fla.), Lake Tahoe and Cabo San Lucas, a bus trip with sideline passes for the Kent State vs. Ohio State football game, and also a dinner for two with football legend, Lou Holtz. Other items include custom jewelry, sports memorabilia and even a 1972 Nick Saban signed football helmet. There was also a raffle for a two-week trip for four to Hawaii.
"This scholarship event was another great example of the passion our supporters, community, fans and alums have for Kent State athletics," said Senior Associate Athletic Director, Executive Director of Athletic Advancement Matthew Geis. "The support of our constituencies continues to play a vital role ensuring our student-athletes realize success nationally in class, in competition and in life."
Edelman, drafted in the seventh round of the 2009 NFL Draft by the Patriots, was a three-year starter at quarterback for Kent State University. He currently holds the Patriots franchise record for longest punt return; and, at the start of the 2013 NFL season, had the highest career punt return average among active players.
"I was excited to come back to campus and to be invited to take part in a great event like the Athletics Scholarship Auction," said Edelman. "I had a great opportunity to play Division I football at Kent State. I know the proceeds from the auction will provide more opportunities for student-athletes. "
A business management major at Kent State, Edelman was an All-MAC Second Team selection in 2006. As a senior in 2008, Edelman threw 13 touchdowns for 1,820 yards. He was also Kent State's leading rusher, gaining 1,370 yards on 215 attempts (an average of 6.4 yards per carry) and scoring 13 touchdowns. His total offense broke Josh Cribbs' single-season school record, set in 2003.
During Friday night's auction, head football coach Paul Haynes invited Edelman to come to the spring game and then meet with the team the next day.
"I thought it was cool that he still shows appreciation for his alma mater and that he really cares," said sophomore quarterback Colin Reardon. "It was also cool for me considering he played my position when he was here. With everything he told us, about what he writes down in meetings, how he pays attention and the things he lives by on the field, it was great to have the chance to listen and learn from someone like that."
