Kent State Pitchers Earn All-MAC Recognition

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Kent State pitchers Emma Johnson and Ronnie Ladines earned Mid-American Conference postseason honors, the conference office announced Tuesday (May 6). Johnson was named Second Team All-MAC and Ladines was named to the All-Freshman Team, as voted on by the league's 12 head coaches.
A junior from Groveport, Ohio, Johnson earned all-league honors for the third time in as many seasons after being named Pitcher of the Year in 2013 and second team in 2012. Johnson owned a 7-3 record with a 2.45 ERA and 51.1 innings pitched in MAC games this season. She made 10 appearances and threw five completes and three shutouts in eight starts, which included a no-hitter against Toledo on April 18. Johnson had 62 strikeouts and ranks second among conference pitchers in strikeouts per seven innings pitched.
Johnson has been terrific since the beginning of the season, helping the Golden Flashes compete against some of the nation's top teams in the non-conference portion of the schedule. She enters this week's MAC Tournament with a 14-9 record, 2.16 ERA and 154 strikeouts over 132.2 innings of action. Johnson has four victories Top 50 RPI teams, including a one-hit shutout of Kentucky on February 22.
A native of Arlington, Wash., Ladines went 3-3 with a 2.04 ERA and 48.0 innings pitched in league play. She made eight starts and threw five completes with one shutout. In addition to having the lowest ERA among conference freshmen, Ladines led the MAC in strikeouts-to-walks ratio with 45 strikeouts while walking only five batters.
On the season, Ladines is 6-6 with a 2.36 ERA and 85 strikeouts over 92 innings. She has thrown eight complete games in 14 starts. Ladines has also seen action in the Kent State batting lineup and has three home runs and seven RBI.
Kent State will compete at the eight-team, double-elimination MAC Softball Tournament this week at Firestone Stadium in Akron. The fourth-seeded Golden Flashes open the tournament against fifth-seeded Ohio at 11 a.m. on Wednesday.
