Kent State's Madison Thompson will travel to Leizpig, Germany, to participate in the Indoor World Cup of Hockey as a member of the Canadian Indoor National Team. The 12-member team will compete Feb. 4-8.
"It's been a long journey to get to where we are," said Thompson. "Winning the Pan American Cup, the team has exceeded all expectations that other countries and even our own country has set for us. We can't wait to get to Germany and show how Canada can and will be a threat among the best countries to play the game. Being one of the youngest on the team, I am extremely excited to learn from my veteran teammates. It is an honor to wear the maple leaf and play among the best players in the world."
Thompson helped Canada earn a spot in the World Cup after winning gold at the Pan American Cup held in Uruguay last April. The team will compete in Pool A with Australia, Germany, Austria, Belgium and Ukraine. The action will begin Feb. 4 with Canada taking on Austria at 10:15 a.m. local time. The 2015 Indoor Hockey World Cup Gold medalist will be crowned Feb. 8.
The sophomore was a big part of Kent State's Mid-American Conference Championship and historic NCAA Tournament run in 2014. She was honored as a Longstreth/NFHCA Second-Team All-West Region member and earned MAC First Team and All-Tournament distinction.
